England Rolls Out Mandatory Weekly Food Waste Collections Under New Legislation

The British government’s recent legislation aimed at reducing food waste has taken effect, bringing with it the requirement for weekly food waste collections across England. A key component of the new law, this measure is designed to encourage households to separate their organic waste from other trash and recycle it.

While the legislation applies to all English households, a review by local authorities reveals that not all councils are ready to implement the change. A total of 28 authorities have informed the government that they either do not currently offer food waste collections or will not be starting these services by this April’s deadline. This lack of readiness could lead to delays in implementing the weekly collections required by the new law.

Local councils have a deadline of April 2024 to comply with the new legislation. Any councils that fail to meet this deadline will be subject to enforcement action by the national government. However, a majority of English councils have assured that they are prepared to implement the weekly collections, either by increasing collections from their existing schedule or establishing new services to meet the requirements of the new legislation.

As part of the legislation, all households with at least one food waste bin will have their existing collections of non-food waste increased from weekly to bi-weekly. The goal behind these changes is to encourage households to separate food waste and reduce the amount of non-compostable materials in the organic waste stream, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions from waste disposal.

Under the new law, households will be required to collect and store their food waste in kitchen-based bins. From there, a separate food waste collection service will be made available by their local council or another designated waste collection provider.

The government aims to cut food waste significantly in England by implementing this new law and encouraging households to use the separate food waste bins. Food waste is a significant source of greenhouse gases when not managed correctly, and the reduction in waste is a major environmental priority.

According to UK Environment Secretary, the new legislation is an important step towards reaching the country’s goal of reducing food waste by 50% by 2029. Regular collection of food waste can greatly reduce emissions from waste disposal as organic waste can be processed into compost rather than landfilled or incinerated.
