South Africa’s Women Cricket Team Wins Thrilling Match thanks to Last-Ball Six

In a heart-stopping finish to a closely contested match, South Africa’s women cricket team emerged victorious against New Zealand, thanks to a stunning last-ball six off the bat of debutant Kayla Reyneke. The six sealed a thrilling win for the Proteas, who chased down a challenging target of 268 set by New Zealand at the ICC Women’s Championship fixture.

Reyneke’s remarkable debut was perfectly set up by solid half-century contributions from Trisha Chetty’s opening partner, Mignon du Preez, and middle-order batswoman, Marizanne Kapp, along with 64 from Laura Wolvaardt and 62 from Sune Luus, and an impressive 51 from Ayabonga Khaka.

South Africa’s chase was kick-started by Dercksen’s 64 and 62 from Laura Wolvaardt but it was Trisha Chetty who initially laid the foundations with her opening partner, Mignon du Preez. Chetty scored an unbeaten 36 off 34 deliveries.

At one stage, New Zealand’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Leigh Kasperek, looked to have gained the upper hand after restricting South Africa to just 30 from the first 8.5 overs. However, the Proteas’ middle-order showed great resilience, taking the game deep and keeping the New Zealand bowlers at bay.

New Zealand’s own batting effort had been spearheaded by an 85 not out from Amy Satterthwaite’s partner Maddy Green, alongside Rachel Priest and Katie Perkins who scored 42 and 43 respectively. Green’s 85 was the backbone of the visitors’ batting effort at the North West Cricket Stadium in Potchefstroom.
