Spanish Remake of Hit Indian Thriller Drishyam Set to Roll Out in June

The Spanish remake of the acclaimed Indian thriller Drishyam is gearing up to begin production in June, according to a report. This announcement comes after the rights to Drishyam 1 and 2 were acquired by Kumar Mangat Pathak and his son Abhishek, who secured a deal with the original producers, Aashirvad Cinemas.

The news emerged during a recent interview at the International Film Festival of Delhi, where producer Rodrigo Espinel confirmed the project. As part of the collaboration, Drishyam’s Spanish remake will be produced in partnership with a Mexican producer who acquired the international rights. Espinel cited the attractive tax incentives in Spain as a key factor in bringing the project to the country.

“We were approached after being introduced to the project by our Mexican partner, who had purchased the IP rights,” Espinel explained during the interview. “As the story revolves around a father’s actions to protect his family, we felt the narrative could be seamlessly adapted to resonate with the Spanish audience.”

Drishyam, directed by Nishikant Kamat and starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, and Shriya Saran, revolves around an illiterate father’s desperate efforts to safeguard his wife and daughter after a tragic event. This gripping narrative, which has already captured the attention of foreign audiences, is expected to translate well to the Spanish market.

Espinel emphasized the versatility of the story in adapting to Spanish culture, highlighting the key aspects of the narrative that transcend regional boundaries. “As a producer, I’ve found that adapting very Indian-centric stories can be difficult; however, Drishyam stands out as a prime example of a universally relatable story,” he stated.

The decision to film in Spain also reflects the country’s favorable production environment, which attracts international filmmakers seeking to capitalize on Spain’s attractive tax incentives.
