BJP Urges EC to Take Action Against Kharge for Terrorist Remark
Updated: April 22, 2026
A delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met with the Election Commission on Thursday to seek action against Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge for his controversial remark calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘terrorist’. The delegation, led by BJP General Secretary Arun Singh, claimed that Kharge’s statement was an attempt to incite violence and disrupt the peaceful polling process.
According to sources, the BJP delegation submitted a complaint to the Election Commission and sought strict action against Kharge. They alleged that Kharge’s statement was a blatant misuse of the electoral process and an attempt to create communal tension. Party sources claimed that the delegation also sought to know the stance of the Election Commission on the matter.
Kharge had made the inflammatory remark during a poll rally in Karnataka, where he is facing a Lok Sabha election. The remark had sparked widespread condemnation from the BJP and other opposition parties, who termed it as ‘unfortunate’ and ‘unbecoming’ of a senior leader.
The BJP delegation accused Kharge of using derogatory language to create hate and fear among voters. They also sought to know if the Election Commission would take any action against Kharge under the model code of conduct, which bars candidates from using inflammatory language during the electoral process.
Sources in the Election Commission hinted that they might consider action against Kharge, but nothing has been finalized yet. The Commission is likely to seek a report from the Returning Officer of the election, who can take a statement from Kharge and verify the authenticity of the video footage showing the remark.
The BJP’s move comes at a time when elections are underway in multiple states and the Model Code of Conduct is in place. The party is looking to capitalize on the controversy surrounding Kharge’s remark to win over voters.
The development has sparked a war of words between the BJP and Congress, with both parties accusing each other of playing politics over the issue. The BJP has taken a stern stance, claiming that Kharge’s statement is a betrayal of trust and an attempt to create disharmony among voters.
The Election Commission has been tight-lipped on the issue, but sources suggested that they might take action against Kharge if the Returning Officer submits a complaint against him.
It is worth noting that the BJP has not been the only party to protest against Kharge’s remark. Other opposition parties have also condemned the statement, but the BJP sees it as an opportunity to gain traction and discredit the Congress party.
The development is likely to have implications for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections and might influence voter sentiment in the days to come.
The BJP's move to seek action against Kharge reflects a larger strategy to create confusion and discredit the Congress party ahead of crucial elections. The strategy seems to be working, with the controversy dominating headlines and sparking a fierce war of words between the two parties. However, the Election Commission's role in the matter will be crucial, as it can either take decisive action against Kharge or choose to ignore the complaint, potentially diluting the impact of the controversy.
