Delimitation Bill Fails to Clear Key Hurdle in Lok Sabha, Democracy Triumphs Say Opposition Leaders
In a significant development, the Constitution Amendment Bill, aimed at revising electoral constituency boundaries ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls, has been stymied after the Centre failed to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha.
Opposition leaders have welcomed the outcome, terming it a victory for democracy. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi expressed her support, stating, ‘Victory for democracy.’ Gandhi has been vocal about the opposition to the delimitation Bill and has been instrumental in organizing protests across various parts of the country. Her party has been critical of the proposed reforms, arguing that they were an attempt to undermine the rights of various regional groups and exacerbate existing inequalities.
Key to the Bill’s defeat was the failure of the government to garner support from all parties within the coalition. Several key partners within the National Democratic Alliance abstained from or voted against the Bill, denying the Centre the required supermajority. Opposition parties, which have been in the forefront of the protests against the delimitation Bill, have seen this outcome as a major victory.
As of now, the delimitation process remains on hold. This decision is seen as a major set back for the BJP government which was hoping to introduce electoral reforms and reshape the electoral map to its advantage ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
