Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves has called for the United Kingdom to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence and strengthen economic ties with the European Union as key drivers for national growth. Speaking at the annual Mais Lecture at Bayes Business School in London, Reeves highlighted innovation, regional development, and a closer relationship with Europe as pivotal opportunities to boost the UK economy.
In her speech, Reeves outlined a £2.5 billion investment plan for AI and quantum computing, emphasizing that Britain must act faster than its G7 rivals to capitalize on technological advancements. “Britain is not powerless. We can shape our own future through stability, investment, and reform,” Reeves said, adding that AI, innovation, and deeper EU ties will define the country’s growth in the decade ahead.
The Chancellor also proposed creating a “Silicon Valley of Europe” in the Oxford-Cambridge corridor, aiming to foster high-tech industries and position the UK as a hub for the industries of the future. The lecture comes amid broader economic pressures, including energy shocks linked to global conflicts and domestic concerns over living standards.
