The New South Wales government has issued nearly 100 penalty infringement notices to service stations for misrepresenting their fuel prices, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by regional communities during the fuel crisis. A crackdown on fuel prices in New South Wales has led to nearly 100 service stations being issued penalty infringement notices for misrepresenting their prices, despite an ongoing fuel shortage in the region. The two-week compliance blitz by the state government saw inspectors visit around 75% of stations registered with fuel price app FuelCheck in NSW, resulting in a total of 93 notices.
The vast majority of the affected stations, with 70 locations, are located in regional areas of NSW, underscoring the challenges faced by rural communities during the fuel crisis. A further 23 service stations in the state capital, Sydney, also received penalty infringement notices.
The initiative, part of the state government’s response to the fuel shortage, aimed to ensure that service stations were accurately displaying their prices. FuelCheck, an app providing real-time fuel prices across NSW, played a key role in the compliance process, enabling inspectors to easily identify any discrepancies.
Inspectors visited nearly 1,800 stations during the two-week period, a significant proportion of the more than 2,500 stations registered with FuelCheck in NSW. The fact that none of the service stations were issued penalties for price gouging suggests that the focus was specifically on accurate price representation.
The state government’s efforts to address the fuel shortage appear to be ongoing, with continued pressure on service stations to maintain transparency in their pricing. As the situation evolves, further actions may be taken to address the underlying issues driving the fuel crisis.
