Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to embark on an official visit to Germany from April 21, where he will likely discuss a long-awaited submarine deal worth over $8 billion, marking a significant boost to India’s naval capabilities. Singh’s high-level meeting, aimed at strengthening India-Germany defence ties, will reportedly focus on the procurement of six conventional submarines to be built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, in collaboration with German defence giant Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).
According to sources, the German company is close to finalising the deal with the Indian Ministry of Defence, with talks progressing steadily over the past few months. The deal, valued at over $8 billion, is anticipated to be a major coup for India’s defence industry, as it will bring in vital expertise and technological advancements in submarine manufacturing.
The proposed submarines are designed to provide India with enhanced maritime surveillance capabilities and bolster its naval strength in the region. As part of the agreement, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited will work in collaboration with TKMS, with the latter expected to bring its expertise in submarine design and construction to the project.
India’s Defence Ministry has been actively pursuing the acquisition of a new submarine fleet, with the existing ones nearing the end of their operational life. The new deal is seen as a strategic move to upgrade India’s naval capabilities, as it prepares to face emerging challenges in the Asia-Pacific region.
