A brewing crisis within the Congress party in Karnataka has reached a boiling point, with the party’s high command reportedly considering the ousting of Chief Minister’s Secretary over alleged links to a controversial candidate in the recent Davangere South bypoll.
Sources close to the party have revealed that the leadership is deeply upset over reports that certain leaders, including a senior minister, allegedly funded and supported the candidate from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), a Islamist group seen as a faction of the banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
The involvement of a senior minister, who has not been named, has raised eyebrows, and their potential ties to the SDPI are being scrutinized. The incident has put a cloud over the minister’s political future, with many within the party questioning their loyalty and commitment to the party.
The Congress party has been facing pressure to tackle the issue, with some leaders pushing for a formal investigation into the allegations. The party’s leadership, however, seems reluctant to take decisive action, fearing it may lead to further divisions within the party.
Davangere South bypoll, which took place in December last year, witnessed the victory of the SDPI candidate, who garnered significant support from the local Muslim population. The internal bickering has also sparked concerns about the party’s ability to take on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka, scheduled to take place in 2025.
