In a devastating turn of events, a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Mentawai, leaving one person dead and triggering tsunami warnings for several coastal communities. The quake, which occurred at approximately 11:30 PM local time on March 29, sent shockwaves through the region, causing widespread destruction and disrupting the lives of thousands of residents and tourists.
According to officials, the epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 20 miles south of the coastal town of Pagai Utara, located in the Mentawai Islands Regency. The quake’s depth was calculated to be around 12 miles, with its impact felt as far as the islands of West Sumatra and Nias.
Indonesian authorities have issued a tsunami warning for the affected areas, with waves reaching as high as 4 feet in some regions. Rescuers are scrambling to evacuate those in danger, with the military deployed to assist in search and rescue efforts.
One person was confirmed dead in the disaster, with several others injured and numerous houses destroyed. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but officials warn of further damage and potential for landslides.
