Jaishankar, Nepal Foreign Minister Pledge to Deepen India-Nepal Ties, Push Cooperation to ‘New Heights’
In a reaffirmation of close regional partnership, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Nepal’s Foreign Minister held discussions aimed at strengthening India-Nepal relations, with both sides expressing a commitment to elevate cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, connectivity, energy, and people-to-people ties.
The talks, described by officials as “constructive and forward-looking,” underscored the shared emphasis on expanding economic integration and improving cross-border infrastructure between the two neighbours. Both leaders reportedly agreed that the long-standing historical, cultural, and civilizational links between India and Nepal continue to serve as the foundation for the bilateral relationship.
According to diplomatic sources, the discussions also touched upon ongoing projects under India’s development assistance framework in Nepal, particularly in road connectivity, hydropower development, and border infrastructure enhancement. These initiatives are seen as central to improving regional mobility and boosting economic opportunities in Nepal’s border regions.
Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s development priorities, while Nepal’s Foreign Minister emphasized Kathmandu’s interest in further expanding trade access and investment flows from India. Both sides also explored ways to streamline cross-border movement of goods and strengthen supply chain linkages.
Security cooperation and regional stability were also part of the dialogue, with both ministers noting the importance of continued coordination on shared challenges, including border management and disaster response mechanisms in the Himalayan region.
The meeting comes at a time when India is seeking to deepen engagement with its immediate neighbourhood under its “Neighbourhood First” policy, while Nepal continues to balance economic development needs with diplomatic ties across regional partners.
Officials said both sides expressed optimism that ongoing initiatives and upcoming high-level exchanges would further reinforce the “unique and multifaceted” nature of India-Nepal relations.
The discussions concluded with a mutual commitment to maintain regular diplomatic engagement and accelerate implementation of pending bilateral projects.
