European civil liberties officials have sounded the alarm on a pressing concern within the EU, where democratic standards are eroding and the rule of law is under intense pressure. In a stark warning, Liberties, a prominent watchdog organization, has identified five EU member states – Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, and Slovakia – as governments that are consistently and intentionally dismantling the rule of law.
According to the group’s research, which draws on evidence from over 40 non-governmental organizations in 22 countries, these five governments have been actively pursuing policies that undermine democratic principles. This development has significant implications for the future of the EU, where rule of law and democracy have traditionally been upheld as fundamental values.
Liberties’ findings highlight the concerning trend of democratic backsliding in several EU member states, with an additional six countries experiencing a decline in democratic standards.
